Which trials and where?
If you would like to take part in a clinical trial it is advisable to first discuss it with your neurologist or MS Nurse as they will normally need to refer you. They may also know of a trial that would be suitable for you.
Unfortunately there isn't a comprehensive resource that contains all the information about clinical trials that are currently being undertaken in the UK. However there are a number of web sites that contain information about clinical trials (which are detailed below.)
It should be noted that trials may be single centre (one hospital), or multi centred (a number of hospitals through out the UK and sometimes Europe and the rest of world). The location where a trial takes place is usually dictated by where the doctors with the specialist interest and expertise in the condition being studied and the appropriate resources are based. From a practical point this may means that they are not accessible to everyone who meets the eligibility criteria.
Please be aware that on most of the sites you will need to enter 'Multiple Sclerosis' or 'Neurological' in to the search facility to find trial information that is specific to MS. Where you are given details as to how to obtain further information please note that by making enquiries you are not committing yourself to any further involvement.
www.clinicaltrials.gov This is an international site used by both pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions. List of MS trials with study centres in the UK.
www.ukcrn.org.uk/index.html The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is building a complete picture of the clinical research which is currently taking place across the UK. Details of studies which meet specific eligibility criteria are recorded in a database known as the NIHR CRN portfolio which covers England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Search the Portifolio Database for studies and more information about the database.
www.controlled-trials.com This site is owned by Current Controlled Trials Ltd and assigns each trial with its own unique International Standard Randomisation Controlled Trial Number (ISRCTN) which is internationally recognised and allows the trial to be tracked through its life cycle from initial protocol to results publication. Both commercial and non commercial trials are included.
