Stay Active Fishing

Fishing is one of the most popular leisure pursuits in the UK. Since the best times for fishing are early morning and late evening, this is an ideal way to enjoy some fresh air whilst avoiding the sun if you experience heat sensitivity. Many fishing venues throughout the country cater for people with disabilities. Resources such as ramps and platforms at the water’s edge, wheelyboats and adaptive equipment, make this a relaxing activity that anyone can enjoy.

The National Federation of Anglers is the governing body for freshwater anglers. Their aim is to facilitate the needs of those wishing to take up the sport and to safeguard its future.

The British Disabled Angling Association was founded in 1996 to develop fishing opportunities for disabled people. Its site includes guides to various types of fishing, accessible fisheries and specialised fishing equipment.

The Handicapped Anglers Trust (which incorporates Boating for the Disabled) focuses most of its activities on wheelyboats. These boats have ramps that lower onto the shore for easy wheelchair access, and flat decks that allow wheelchairs to be freely manoeuvred once on board.

The English Disabled Fly Fishers provide advice on equipment and suitable fishing venues to anyone with a keen interest in fly-fishing, whether new to the sport or an old hand.
