Birdwatching is a hobby that you don’t have to go far to enjoy. There are many forests, nature reserves and country parks that are excellent for birdwatching. However, a lot of good birdwatching can be done through your window or from a car – which can make a good hide. Birdwatching can provide you with hours of entertainment, and there are lots of ways to encourage birds into your garden and closer to your window.
The RSPB is the UK charity working to secure a healthy environment for birds and wildlife. They can provide tips for disabled birdwatchers on topics including:
- resources and equipment
- wheelchair accessible nature reserves and hides
- how to attract more birds to your garden

The Disabled Birders Association is a relatively new organisation that is seeking to improve access for people with disabilities to reserves, facilities and services for birdwatching.
If you have a particular interest in garden birds, the British Trust for Ornithology promotes bird conservation through volunteer surveys.
Birds of Britain is a monthly web magazine for birdwatchers. The site includes a guide to Britain’s bird reserves and clubs, an illustrated guide of over 100 bird species and a directory of bird tour and holiday companies.
