Vitamin D: hope on the horizon for MS prevention?
27 May 2010
An editorial in the latest issue of Lancet Neurology discusses the potential for vitamin D supplements to reduce the risk of developing multiple sclerosis.
The article concludes that trials are needed to address the many uncertainties that remain. Because any benefits for MS could take decades to emerge, a long-term outlook is needed from policy makers.
An extensive review of the evidence for a role of vitamin D in preventing and for treating MS is also published in this issue of Lancet Neurology.
Pam Macfarlane, the MS Trust Chief Executive, said "Evidence is accumulating that vitamin D deficiency may play a role in the risk of developing MS. Large-scale, multinational clinical trials are now needed to establish the safety and effectiveness of vitamin D supplements. In the meantime, anyone concerned about their vitamin D levels should take advice from their doctor."
