Icelandic Horse Trek - itinerary
22-29 August 2010: 8 days/7 nights (5 days riding)
Day 1
Arrival in Iceland - Stóri-Kálfalækur Farm
Flight from London to Reykjavik. Transfer by bus from Keflavík International Airport to Stóri-Kalfalækur Farm for dinner and overnight. After dinner our guide will give a talk about the historical aspect of our riding tour and the Icelandic horse.
Day 2
Stóri Kálfalækur - Hítardalur valley (35 km)
Today our riding adventure begins. Horses and staff are ready for us. We start our ride into the mountains through fertile farmlands and along good riding tracks, through lava-fields and along low bushy hillsides to Hítardalur valley. The valley is renown for its lava formations and multi-coloured mountains. We leave the horses at the Hítarhólmur Mountain and drive back to Stóri-Kálfalækur, where the hot tub is waiting.
Day 3
Hítardalur - Haukatunga Farm - Lindartunga community centre (35 km)
We start this day with a ride to the round-up place in Hítardalur and proceed west across Hítará River. Be surprised by the change to black ashes and lava covering an area well known as the hideout of Iceland's most famous outlaw, Grettir. At Haukatunga Farm we leave the horses and drive to Lindartunga community centre where we stay overnight.
Day 4
Haukatunga - Traðir - Hof Farm (45 km)
After rejoining the horses we start our ride on Löngufjörur, the famous horse trail on the seashores of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. View Snæfellsjökull Glacier ahead of you, known in literature to be the entrance to the center of the earth. Feel the horses' excitement and join in their joy on this extraordinary trail released by the tide. Our horses spend the night at Traðir Farm while we stay at Hof Farm with a geothermal hot tubs on site.
Day 5
Traðir - Kolviðarnes Farm (40 km)
Another day on the yellow coloured, sandy beach. Direction changes and we head back towards mighty Eldborgarhraun lava field. A unique experience for everyone with lava-fields and mountains on one side of the trail and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. We leave the horses at Kolviðarnes Farm and drive to Stóri-Kálfalækur, where we spend the last two nights.
Day 6
Kolviðarnes - Stóri-Kálfalækur Farm (30 km)
Last day on the beach and yet a new experience. The sand turns black as we follow the outline of Eldborgarhraun lava field. Imagine the black lava still on the move on your way back to dry land. The ride ends at Stóri-Kálfalækur Farm where we spend the night.
Day 7
Stóri-Kálfalækur Farm - Reykjavík
Day at your own disposal. Optional tours.
Day 8
Reykjavík - Keflavík Airport
Transfer to the airport for the flight back home.
Notes
Please note that the beach ride is determined by the tide, therefore, the riding can start at any hour of the day and even last into the night.
Important: Knee-high rubber boots (Wellingtons) are recommended for this tour!
