A to Z of MS Gabapentin (Neurontin)

Neurontin. Several non branded versions are available.

Gabapentin is a drug used in the treatment of neuropathic pain in multiple sclerosis, that is pain caused directly by the effects of MS, such as trigeminal neuralgia or dysaesthesia (abnormal sensations such as burning or pins and needles). The drug is also used in the treatment of spasms and spasticity and the NICE Guideline recommends gabapentin as one of the first drugs to try for this symptom.

How gabapentin works

Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant and anti-epileptic drug.

How is gabapentin given?

Gabapentin is taken orally as tablets. When stopping treatment, the dosage should be gradually reduced.

Side effects and contraindications

Side effects can include sedation, dizziness, fatigue and weakness.
